IIT Goa Celebrates 1st Founder’s Day; Plans to Expand Space and Programmes

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Goa completed one year in the academia and celebrated its Founder’s Day on August 1, 2017. The institute operates under the mentorship of IIT Bombay and has closed admission to all the 90 seats that it offers.
The institute also released its logo during the first founder's day celebrations. Although IIT Goa has good news with all the seats filled for the academic session 2017, the institute is facing a space crunch with 180 now students that it needs to accommodate.
IIT Goa is currently operating from the Goa Engineering College, Farmagudi, where it has been allotted a few classes to facilitate education. Director of IIT Goa, Barada Kanta Mishra informed that more space will be allotted to them by the Goa Engineering College at its main complex.
Currently, the institute offers four branches i.e. computer science and engineering, mechanical engineering and electrical engineering. Despite the lack of space, the institute is planning to start some new subjects within the existing courses.
Talking about the future plans of the institute, Mishra also added that IIT Goa will also expand its activities into different domains. The aim of the institute is to help its students develop their profiles.

He added that subjects in the field of engineering science, computing and mathematics will soon be introduced by IIT Goa. Mishra expects that these programmes will introduce more students as they are not offered by IIT Bombay.
He further added that this is just the conceptualizing stage and the institute is considering various possibilities. A music programme has also been started by IIT Goa for students from the academic session 2017-18.
Mishra also informed that five new faculty members will also be hired by the institute in 2017. Further, advertisements will be posted for recruiting faculty members in senior positions, he added.

IIT Goa will also organise a full-day workshop for girls across the state who aspire to pursue their higher education from IITs. This step has been taken to increase the intake of girls at IITs. Currently, only 10% of the total number of students at IIT Goa are girls.
