IIT Madras Signs MoU with TANSTIA on Water Treatment Project

Indian Institute of Technology, Madras has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with TANSTIA-FNF Service Centre on water treatment project. The MoU has been signed in the presence of C. Babu, Chairman of TANSTIA-FNF and Prof. Krishnan Balasubramaniam, Dean of Industrial Consultancy and Sponsored Research at IIT Madras.

The research project is being funded by International Development Research Centre, Canada for developing the filter and water analysis kit. Two students of Civil Engineering Department headed by Prof. Ligy Phillip developed two water-testing kits and these are developed for the continuous monitoring of quality of drinking water especially in rural areas. The water testing kits are distributed to 176 panchayats to carry out field-testing.

Mr. C. Babu, Chairman of TANSTIA-FNF revealed that their main aim is to enhance the technology to 1,500 entrepreneurs within five years. He further explained that most of the water-related problems arise in rural areas due to lack of access to water testing facilities and awareness.

The water testing kits will play a significant role in removing odour, organic matter, turbidity and colour as well as extreme bacteriological contamination. Later, the filtered water can be collected in a container that has proper lid and tap. With an objective to remove microbes, chlorine tablet is added.

Prof. Balasubramaniam expressed that the professors of IIT Madras are committed to the development of society in various aspects. The water treatment project will benefit day-to-day entrepreneurs. The institute will provide technological support to the project.
