A new development, under the fee hikes that have been raging across the nation, has come up in the form of the Ministry holding off on raising the fees for M.Tech at the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). After the recent JNU protests over the hike in fees, media reports, officials were forced to reconsider the decision of raising the fees.

As per a meeting that had been held on this respect, the IIT council has decided to discuss on the agenda of raising the fees in the next IIT meeting. According to the press release of the ministry, the IIT council has agreed upon suggestions for reforming the M.Tech fees, which should be the same as that for B.Tech students.

In other words, the development has brought in a new aspect where the M.Tech fees at IITs will not be raised immediately. However, in the span of 3 years, the IIT M.Tech fees will be raised to ₹2 lakh per year from the current ₹30,000 per year.

Earlier, the Ministry was adamant in raising the M.Tech fees at the premier engineering institute, even though the students had protested against the hikes. Some sources have stated that the officials have been forced to rethink keeping in mind the recent JNU fee hike protests. Previously, the Ministry had stated that the reason for raising the fees was to discourage those M. Tech students who enrol into the programme and leave the course mid-way after they secure a job.

Thes undesirable vacancies that prop up mid-way through the course, prompted the government and the IIT council to take an action. They stated that the actions taken by the students resulted in the wastage of resources, seats, and opportunities for those who deserved it.
