The HRD Ministry had recommended that the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs) conduct a joint counselling for admissions.

However, the IITs disagree and continue to resist the proposal to conduct joint counselling for the IITs and 7 IISERs on the basis of JEE Advanced. The matter was discussed at the meeting of the Joint Admission Board (JAB) held on August 20 in Chennai.

The premier engineering institutes remain unconvinced about sharing their counselling platform with IISERs. In the meeting, the members of JAB said that counselling process on the basis of JEE advanced should only provide admissions to the IITs.

It was also decided in the meeting that if other institutes wish to participate in the counselling process, the matter should be forwarded to the Senates of all IITs – decision-making bodies that is responsible for maintaining standards of education and examination for IITs.

According to a government official, the IITs are refusing to share JEE Advanced counselling platform with IISERs as it will dilute the brand of the institutes. The official also added that the prestigious institutes fear that some of the students might also choose IISERs over the new IITs.

The HRD Ministry is still trying to convince the IITs to accept the proposal. To address the matter, a committee comprising both IIT and IISER representatives has been set up.

Currently, the IISERs conduct their counselling a week after the JEE Mains counselling for NITs and JEE Advanced counselling for IITs. IISERs offer close to 1,200 seats across its seven campuses in Berhampur, Kolkata, Bhopal, Mohali, Pune, Thiruvananthapuram and Tirupati.

Out of these, 10% seats are filled through the Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY), approximately 40% seats are filled on the basis of JEE advanced ranks, whereas, the remaining seats are filled on the basis of IISER Aptitude Test.
