IITs Reluctant to Lower Cut-Off for B.Tech Admissions
- Despite the lower number of qualifiers in JEE Advanced 2018, IITs have decided not to lower cut-offs for B.Tech admissions.
- This year, only 18,138 candidates cleared JEE Advanced exam.
With the number of students clearing theJEE Advanced examwitnessing a drastic fall, the conducting authority i.e. IIT Kanpur has decided not to lower thecut-off for the admission to B.Tech courses.
Joint Admission Board (JAB)convened an emergency meeting comprising of top-ranking officials of IITs and directors of the premier institutes. The issue of vacant seats that may arise this year was the major agenda of the meeting. During the meeting, the officials expressed their views on the issue and decided not to minimize the cut-off for the admission toB.Tech coursesthis year.

The officials of JAB further confirmed that action would be initiated after conducting a simulated selection process based on previous year’s data. An analysis of the last year’s data will help JAB to figure out whether seats in IITs will go vacant or not.
One of the officials of JAB revealed that the admission committee is planning to conduct asimulated counselling processto sort out whether there are enough aspirants to fill 11,279 B.Tech seats for the academic session 2018-19. According to the data available, there should not be any vacancies this year, he stated.

This year,only 18,138 candidates cleared JEE Advanced exam. The number of qualified candidates is 1.6 times higher than the total number of seats available.
