The IITs have a good amount of students from the Hindi-medium background as JEE is conducted in both Hindi and English and students from Hindi-medium schools qualify the exam as well.

These students face a lot of difficulties as the curriculum is structured in English and are not able to perform in exams due to this problem.

A study was conducted by the IIT Council to assess the performance of students coming from Hindi-medium background. It was found that these students find it difficult to grasp the basic concepts as most of the lectures are conducted in English.

V Ramgopal Rao, Director of IIT-Delhi, said that a support system has been introduced for such students with the help of their Hindi cell staffers who will explain these subjects to students. The special cell has been launched for the first-year students, added Rao.

Director of IIT-Roorkee, Pradipta Banerji said that the institute has asked professors fluent in both the languages to conduct extra classes for Hindi-medium students to help them understand the concepts better.

Many sources have reported that students from Hindi background are not able to advance to the second year or are expelled from the institutes because they are not able to understand the concepts due to the language barrier.

The study also showed that percentage of successful English-medium students in JEE Advanced 2016 was 24% whereas only 15% students belonging to Hindi medium background made it through.
