Osmania University has announced that pursuing an internship is mandatory for the students of three-year law and five-year law courses. Students in the second-year of the LLB course at OU will have to undergo three-week internship, while final year LLB students will have to undergo a two-week internship. The new rule is applicable from the academic session 2018-19. Earlier, internships were only mandatory for final year law students for selected papers.

Dean of OU Faculty of Law, Professor GB Reddy clarified that all the second and final year law students in Osmania University, affiliated colleges and private universities will have to undergo mandatory internships. Second-year law students who need to pursue a three-week internship must note that they should take up the same either with High Court or Supreme Court judges, tribunals, corporate law officers, NGOs and senior advocates with more than 10 years of experience, he explained.

At present, only national law schools and certain corporate law colleges have the mandatory internship rule. Osmania University is the first state university to make the internship rule mandatory for law students. The varsity is also planning to make internship mandatory for first-year law students. After the completion of second semesters, these students must pursue a three-week internship.

As per the new rule, the internship will carry marks and grades will be allotted for the same. The new rule will help students in finding placement offers after the completion of the course.

After the completion of the internship, the students must submit an internship certificate from the respective company/ lawyer/ organisation. On the other hand, students will also have to submit a project report duly attested by a professional.
