Almost 30% of the students who got through JEE Mains to the second round of JEE Advanced for admissions in the Indian Institute of Technology or IITs have opted out of the race. The number of IIT admission quitters are 72,000 as reported by the JEE authority. JEE Advanced is the second and final step after JEE Mains to get into IITs.

The IITs have decided to shortlist more candidates to increase the IIT applicant pool. The IITs have decided that they will consider 2,000 more candidates eligible for JEE Advanced. The number of IIT Aspirants in 2019 has been capped at 1.73 lakh which is just an increase by 8,000 candidates from the previous year.

The statistics do not include numbers from Odisha as the cyclone hit state has been given time till 14th May to complete the registration process where the registrations concluded on 9th May, Thursday in the rest of the country.

A director of an eminent IIT institute has informed that the JEE Advanced examinations are now conducted online which gives IITs ease to evaluate the answer sheets. Unlike IITs which has a very rigid and strict admission procedure, many private academies that have emerged recently are not that stringent and they have become more and more popular among the students. He claimed that some students who are unsure of cracking the JEE Advanced examination do not sit for the exams.

However, the absolute number of IIT Aspirants in 2019 has gone up to 1 lakh 73 thousand from the last year’s number which was 1 lakh and 65 thousand which is the almost same percentage of students who opted out of the IIT race. A trusted source cited that the students were confident that they can get into NITs or National Institute of Technology with their JEE Mains Rank, hence, they decided to opt out of IIT.

Even though the IITs are trying to bring foreign students on board, this year, the foreign student registration has not indicated any hope. A professional who is associated with the body that conducts JEE has informed that foreign students enrolment in IITs is still in hundreds.

However, the number is expected to increase by a few thousand when the registration process concludes from the state of Odisha. The registrations were rescheduled due to the Cyclone Fani that devastated the eastern coast.
