JNU to Start Engineering and Management Courses Soon

  • On December 1, 2017, Academic Council of JNU gave the approval to set up a School of Engineering which will be functional from the academic session 2019-20.
  • JNU would also start a school of management and entrepreneurship to focus more on innovation.

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) is expected to soon offer courses in engineering and management. The Academic Council (AC) of JNU has given the approval for the following:

  • To set up a School of Engineering that will offer engineering courses across specialisations and also an integrated five-year degree course.
  • Special centre for Sanskrit studies at JNU will be upgraded into a school - ‘School for Sanskrit and Indic Studies'.
  • JNU would also start a school of management and entrepreneurship to focus more on innovation.

During the AC meeting on December 1, JNU Teachers’ Association sought clarity on how the engineering courses offered by JNU would be different from IITs. However, the AC did not give any clarification in this regard. The association alleged that the varsity did not circulate any proposal on upgrading the Sanskrit studies centre.

The Academic Council revealed that UGC had promised Rs. 180 crore for setting up School of Engineering and complete support in terms of faculty positions. Discussions were also held on the admission process for engineering courses offered by JNU. If everything goes as per plan, JNU will start offering engineering courses from the academic session 2019-20.
