On Wednesday, June 22, 2022, in a meeting chaired by the Karnataka’s Higher Education Minister, C N Ashwath Narayan, and representatives of the Karnataka Unaided Private Engineering Colleges Association (KUPECA), the government has taken the decision to merge the state-level COMEDK and KCET entrance examinations into a single national-level entrance examination for UG admissions from AY 2023-24.

“After the COMEDK exam is scraped, KCET will be extended to the national level,” C N Ashwath Narayan said. “An agreement with KUPECA regarding the same will soon be signed.”

From the next year, eligibility for admission to the professional undergraduate courses will be based on the ranks and scores achieved by the students in this soon-to-be-announced exam while the seat matrix for both COMEDK and KCET will be continued as per the current provisions.

“There will not be COMEDK or KCET entrance tests from next year for UG engineering courses,” Manjunath Bhandary, Chairperson of Technical Committee at KUPECA, said. “The exam and seat allotment will be carried out by Karnataka Examinations Authority.”

Now that the decision has been finalized, the steps to merge COMEDK and Karnataka CET are being worked out. Upon questioning about the next course of action, Narayan said, “The modalities to merge COMEDK and CET are being discussed and will soon be announced.”

While the syllabus for the scraped COMEDK and KCET will remain the same, changes to the exam pattern are expected. More details regarding the same will be given by the authorities in due time.

In this meeting, the government also took the decision to limit the fee hike in private engineering colleges at 10% in contrast to the demand to increase the hike to 25% for AY 2022-23. The state government also agreed that except a 10% hike on the current fee, no other extra fee would be collected. It should be noted that this fee hike is only applicable to the students who have been allotted government seats at private engineering colleges.
