LPU & IISER Student Researchers Develop Algae Based Air Purifier
The air purifier developed by the students is successful in terms of not only removing 98% of harmful particles & matters but also increasing the amount of oxygen in the outside air. The students were provided guidance by IISER assistant professor, Dr Sunila A Patil and the Division of Startup, LPU.
Students researchers from IISER and LPU have jointly developed an algae-based air purifier, making India proud. The air purifier developed by the students is successful in terms of not only removing 98% of harmful particles & matters but also increasing the amount of oxygen in the outside air.
For the air purifier, the algae have been used as microbes for algae conduct photosynthesis through which it will use the carbon-di-oxide, water and sunshine to make the outside air more breathable. The student researchers who developed the air purifier consist of Ravneet Yadav, pursuing his PhD from Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER); Anant Kumar Rajput and Deepak Deb, who are third-year students in engineering at Lovely Professional University (LPU). The students were provided guidance by IISER assistant professor, Dr Sunila A Patil and the Division of Startup, LPU.

As stated by the officials of LPU, the new air purifier developed by the students consists of equipment and process which is completely different from other purifiers in the market. The air purifier consists of an in-built container filled with marine algae which are used to remove the toxic elements from the air and also decontaminate the air indoor. The purifier has a success rate of 89% which removes some of the most toxic elements from the air including nitrogen oxide, carbon monoxide, and sulphur oxide.
The most innovative thing is, the air purifier developed by these students creates a byproduct in the form of biomass which can be used to further sell to bio development based industries, pharmaceuticals and FMGC.

As per the student researchers, they got inspired to develop an algae-based air purifier from the research conducted by space research for creating oxygen in space through algae.
Further, the student’s team is working on developing an algae-based face mask by the year 2020.
