Lucknow University Student Placements: False Data Provided?

The placement cell of the University of Lucknow (LU) seems to make false claims about the student's placements. The university has claimed that students have been recruited by various organisations even though they are still interning with the companies.

On 25th April, the placement cell released a press statement claiming that 249 students have been successfully placed in different organisations. According to the given statement, 24 of them, from the department of journalism and mass communication had been hired by a private TV news channel. However, the truth was that the students from the department of journalism had been interning with the TV news channel without getting any pay packages or pre-placement offer (PPO) letter. Similarly, other students have also taken in by companies as interns, but not employees.

Prof Madhurima Lall, the director of counselling and placements when contacted gave an explanation saying that usually the students interning in different organisations get recruited there. And they hope LU's bright students also get placed in their interning companies.

Out of the 249 students who were claimed to be placed, 40 of them are interns. She tried to cover this telling the majority of the students got their placement in a good organisation and are doing really well. And the number of students doing an internship without offer letter are much less.

Prof SP Singh, university vice chancellor said that he will discuss this matter with the director of the placement cell. He also ensured that in future, no such incorrect information will be given about the final placements.

The university has been without a good placement cell for quite some time. The new placement cell of the LU on 25th April stated that the university had produced good quality students every year. It also mentioned that dozen of companies are waiting to take up more students from LU.

LU is able to assist the student in getting placed without incurring any extra fees from the students, unlike other organisations where placements are taken up as a costly affair. Also, the campus placement has been done for the departments where in past no placement had happened.

According to the information given by LU, twelve students from psychology had been placed while two placements from anthropology department, seventy from business administration, sixty from applied economics and commerce, eleven from social works, twenty-four from journalism and mass communication, eleven from B.Ed nine from IMS, thirteen from M.Sc QTM and nine from M.Sc chemistry had been placed.

But the major thing here is that around 20% of the students have been interning with companies without any commitment to retain them.
