Maharashtra Govt. Sets Up Three-Tier Audit System for Mumbai University Colleges
- Maharashtra government has set up a three-tier audit mechanism that will streamline the academic and administrative processes of the Mumbai University.
- If a large number of irregularities are found, the respective college may also lose its affiliation to the premier university.
The Maharashtra government has introduced a three-tier audit mechanism for all the colleges affiliated to the University of Mumbai. The three-tier audit system could be a threat to colleges having major irregularities and they may end up losing their affiliation.
Ch. Vidyasagar Rao, Director Governor and Chancellor, Maharashtra Higher and Technical Education Department has set up three committees for the purpose. The committees will conduct academic audits in all 778 affiliated collegesofMumbai University. The university officials said that after the results mess which happened last year, the university has analyzed the systems and has come across serious gaps in the administrative and academic processes of the university. Therefore, it is very important to streamline the process and conduct regular audits.

The audit mechanism will not only streamline the process but will also help in the improvement of academic performance of these colleges. It will also lead to improvement in infrastructure and other facilities of the colleges. The committee will measure these parameters set by AICTE, Bar Council of India and UGC. The state government has appointed a five-member task force to inquire about the curriculum, departments, infrastructure among others.

According to Agnelo Menezes, the principal of St Xavier’s College, the audits will help improve the quality of higher education in the state and will also lead to the improvement of other facilities.
