Maharashtra Govt. to Introduce Internships for Diploma Students

In a move to give industrial exposure, Maharashtra State Board of Technical Education (MSBTE) is mulling over mandatory internships for diploma students for two months, so that they get good exposure and experience of work culture in the industries.

As per the latest MSBTE newsletter that states, quoting principal secretary Sitaram Kunte, that from now on, the diploma students have to undergo a two-month internship after the IV and V semesters on a pilot basis and this will soon be made mandatory.

The principal secretary in his message, stressed on providing mandatory internship to students, as it is the need of the hour to make necessary changes in the curriculum.

To facilitate the proposed training, MSBTE had also approached leading chambers of commerce like Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) to make it a great success. Not only that, the MSBTE had also approached Board of Apprentice Training (BOAT), Western Region and requested them to link the proposed in-plant activity of diploma students for internship.

It has come to be known that the BOAT authorities have accepted MSBTEs proposal and would help students in getting stipend during their training. They also agreed to offer Certificate of Proficiency once the students complete their training as a part of the scheme.

A senior faculty from a government polytechnic in Maharashtra, Rajnish Pise said that the proposal to make mandatory internships for diploma students may affect the students coming from rural areas. Students in rural areas would not be able to do the internship owing to the dearth of industries in rural areas. Therefore the MSBTE authorities should pay heed to this angle before making any change in the curriculum.

In November 2015, the MSBTE had decided to introduce in-plant training of diploma students for four weeks in all affiliated autonomous polytechnics in the state. Right now Maharashtra has around 760 diploma institutions with an intake of 1.88 lakh students.
