According to a statement, the Maharashtra State Commission for Higher Education and Development, also known as MAHED has approved the plan to set up about 550 colleges across the state of Maharashtra by the next academic year. These will be the non-agricultural state universities, out of which, 60 colleges will be set up under the prestigious University of Mumbai itself.

The new universities will not only offer traditional courses in Science, Commerce and Arts but will also focus on imparting education in skill-based courses. As per the Maharashtra Public Universities Act, based on the need, the universities will have to put forward a plan and propose new slots as per the demand of the courses they wish to offer.

MAHED is headed by CM of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis, who approved the plan for these 550 colleges after going through them in detail recently.

According to the new perspective plan, the government will now be focusing on skill-based courses because of the rising demand in different industries. Courses such as marine engineering and naval architecture will also be taught in these new colleges.

Furthermore, few colleges that will be launched will be reserved exclusively for women so that girl students are encouraged to pursue higher education without any limitations.
