Maharashtra Colleges to Offer Courses in Robotics, AI for Better Employment Opportunities

Maharashtra engineering colleges will soon introduce value-added or elective courses in robotics, artificial intelligence, product design, cyber security etc. in order to open better employment opportunities for students. Check the details below.

Maharashtra Colleges to Offer Courses in Robotics, AI for Better Employment Opportunities

Maharashtra government has decided to assist the engineering and technology colleges of the state to start placement based courses in cybersecurity, artificial intelligence (AI), robotics & product design among others. The autonomous colleges can offer these courses as elective subjects while other colleges can introduce it as a value-added course in their curriculum.

Further, in order to understand the advantages of these courses in the campus placement process and figures, the government also plans to carry out an impact study. The data drawn from the study will include statistics of average salary drawn, skillsets in demand by the industry etc. All the inputs drawn from these studies will be compared to the data obtained next year and conclusions will be interpreted with regard to the effectiveness of the introduction of these courses, revealed Meeta Rajiv Lochan who is the state’s project director for Rashtriya Uchchatar Shikshan Abhiyan (RUSA).

It is often reported that companies spend a lot of time in training freshers. In order to let candidates have the edge in this regard, colleges are trying to introduce such courses so that they are prepared and well-versed with the basic concepts even before they are hired. It is estimated that technologies such as AI and deep learning will be in demand in the future.

The value-added courses which will be offered as electives to second and third-year undergraduate students will offer a total of 70-300 hours study. Apart from that, the state government will additionally organize workshops for students of pharmacy and engineering colleges. On the other hand, students belonging to the computer science background will be taught the AI course in a span of 75-80 hours while extra hours will be added for candidates belonging to the arts and commerce background student as they will be required to learn the basics of applied mathematics as well.

Simultaneously, colleges like IIT Bombay are setting up robotics labs with the help of the central government. Also, St. Xavier’s College is planning to offer robotics and Geographical Information System (GIS) courses to its students.
