MCI Yet to Receive Report of 12,000 MBBS Admissions in 97 Medical Colleges

It has been almost one month since the admission season for MBBS course was completed. However, the Medical Council of India (MCI) is still waiting for details and information on 12,000 MBBS students from 97 colleges across the country. MCI has already notified these colleges to submit the data and has failed to evoke a response. It is mandatory for all the medical colleges to submit the information on fresh MBBS admissions every year so that MCI can check for compliance. As the requirement is pending from the college's end, MCI has cautioned that it would be the students who will suffer if the colleges fail to submit the data on time.

Recently, MCI had cancelled the admissions of 778 MBBS students in Pondicherry when they had already reached the second year of the MBBS course while stating that these colleges violated the norms while admitting the students. These colleges had not followed the guidelines and rules framed by the counselling committee.

Reacting to it, parents criticised the move taken by MCI and said that it should have identified the irregularities in the admission process in 2016 itself. Procedural delay by MCI has led to the wastage of time and money of the students. If the MCI would have taken needed action earlier, students could have appeared for NEET-UG 2017 and sought admission again.

An official associated with MCI pointed that many private medical colleges often resort to violating the guidelines while carrying out the admission process. Few colleges demand an extra fee (apart from the prescribed fee structure by the government) and also admit students without a valid NEET score, he added.

He further mentioned that if the colleges follow the guidelines perfectly, there would be no procedural delays in MCI.
