Meet Ummul Kher Who Overcame Bone Disorder and Bagged 420th Rank in UPSC
- Ummul Kher who has been suffering from bone disorder has secured the 420th rank in UPSC 2016.
- She studied at JNU with 100 percent scholarship. She also cracked the JRF and used to get a fellowship of Rs. 25,000 per month.
Recently, a CBSE Class 12 student who suffered from Cancer scored 95% in Class 12 examinations and attracted the attention of many. Now, Ummul Kher who has been suffering from bone disorder has become the talk of the country by securing the 420th rank in civil services examination 2016.
The life journey of Ummul Kher is an inspiration to many. Kher’s father is a street vendor. He was shocked when came to know that his daughter was born with the fragile bone disorder. Later, Kher underwent eight surgeries due to 16 fractures. When Kher was pursuing Class V, she was shifted to Rajasthan along with her family. However, the family was reluctant to educate their daughter beyond Class VIII.

Explaining about the challenges and problems she faced since childhood, Kher indicated that people used to abuse her and often used to question her intentions to study. She wished to study at Arwachin Bharati Senior Secondary School. She also got a scholarship to pursue higher studies at that school.
In that situation, she moved to a slum area. She used to earn her livelihood by giving tuitions. She felt that giving tuitions with such a disorder was more difficult than preparing for civil services examination. However, she never gave up her dream.
She divided the students into four batches and took tuitions in the evenings. She used to take tuitions continuously from 3:00 PM to 11:00 PM regularly. All the students who used to take tuitions used to pay Rs. 50 – 100 as the fee. Most of these students come from slums, and could not pay more. However, she used to live independently by earning her livelihood.
She further mentioned that it was not safe for a girl to live alone in a slum area. However, she had no other option. She completed her school education at the Amar Jyoti Charitable Trust. She scored 91% in Class 12.

Later, she joined UG at Gargi College. She continued giving tuitions. Unfortunately, she faced an accident in 2012 and was confined to the wheelchair for a while.
After completing her UG degree, she got a seat in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) with 100 percent scholarship. She also cracked JRF and used to get a fellowship of Rs. 25,000 per month.
After facing various challenges and hurdles, she appeared for UPSC Civil Services Examination and bagged 420th rank in the first attempt.
