More IITians Shift Focus to Civil Services and Research
Out of 1,800 students at Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, only 300 students have registered for the placements.
The placement season at Indian Institutes of Technology is set to begin in December, and the students are gearing up to secure best offers on campus. On the other hand, most of the students shifted their focus to civil services instead of attending the campus recruitments. Out of 1,800 students at Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, only 300 students have registered for the placements. The number was same last year too.
Similarly, a total number of 400 students out of 2,046, have registered for placements at Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee. The situation was completely different at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras where only 200 students have registered for placements out of 1,500 students.

There are two reasons for the students opting out from the placement season. One of the reasons is most of the students are going for higher studies and not turning up for placements. Secondly, another prominent reason is that most of the students have shifted their focus to crack civil services examination. Professor Kaustubha Mohanty, Convenor of All IIT Placement Committee (AIPC) indicated that the number of students from IITs appearing for civil services examination has increased in the past five years.

He further added that Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has been gaining popularity with IITians and the placement trend has witnessed a downfall. However, the number of IITians qualifying in civil services has not increased, but the number of students appearing for UPSC has been increasing year by year.
Mohanty also explained that the research was another reason for the students not registering for placements. Some of the students are willing to pursue PhD.
Rohit Jain, one of the students, mentioned that his focus is to get a PhD degree and hence he did not register for placements.
