Out of the 600 first year Master of Law (LLM) students at the Mumbai University, 80% failed in the first semester exams. The students of the programme have complained that they have been wrongly failed by the faculty.

The students also complained that they have not been given enough time to prepare for the re-examinations. The re-exams for those students who had failed in the first semester will be conducted on April 5, 2017.

Professors of the Mumbai University have also admitted that a large number of students have failed the exams this year. In 2016, 60% of the students had failed the examination.

An LLM student said that he was declared fail in two papers. He also added that there were many practiced and experienced lawyers that flunked in more than four papers.

According to a professor of the law department, the rise in number of students who failed could be the result of the hurried exam evaluation process. The papers were corrected by visiting faculty in a couple of days, added the professor.

Although students have been provided with the provision of re-evaluation of papers, their rectified results will not be provided to them before April 5. Many students have asked the university to push back the dates of the re-exams.

Students are also demanding the re-evaluation of papers and penalty for examiners who have not corrected the copies properly.

The Law Department of Mumbai University has said that it will look into the matter. The department also added that the lower pass percentage could be a result of poor performance of the students.
