HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar announced that the government is going to constitute a committee headed by an eminent educationist in the coming ten days. The committee will play a crucial role in drafting the National Education Policy (NEP). He further added that the recommendations from TSR Subramanian Committee would be regarded as ‘input’ to the draft policy. Javadekar held discussions with various stakeholders, experts, parliamentarians and educational institutions.

He indicated that the ministry selected some names for the committee but needed to confirm whether they are going to work or not. It takes three to four months for the committee to submit the report on NEP. Hence, the ministry is confirming the names, and within ten days a new committee will be constituted.

Speaking about the criticism raised by TSR Subramanian for not taking his committee’s draft policy, Javadekar clarified that the committee was only working with the evolution of NEP.

Javadekar has taken all the recommendations made by stakeholders into consideration and assured that he would come up with a policy statement which will have many annexures too.

Answering a question on why the formulation of NEP is taking much time, he replied that the policy is being revised after 30 years. Hence it may take time. He revealed that the drafting of NEP would be completed in the next six months and it would be placed before the Cabinet thereafter.

He exhorted that the NEP was framed in 1986 and then modified in the year 1992. Since then various changes have occurred which eventually was the reason why the government went in for a revision of NEP.

He assured that the government would come up with a policy which will meet all the requirements regarding quality education.
