A total number of 1,000 B.Ed and D.Ed colleges were served show cause notice by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) recently. These colleges failed to submit the mandatory data through affidavits following which the notice was issued.

An official associated with HRD Ministry revealed that NCTE had issued show cause notice to all these colleges to end their affiliation with NCTE. Without NCTE affiliation, these colleges will not be able to enrol students for D.Ed and B.Ed courses. Further, the NCTE is in plans to issue 3,000 more show cause notices, he revealed.

Earlier, NCTE had directed 16,000 D.Ed and B.Ed colleges across the country to submit an affidavit with respect to all data. However, only 12,000 colleges complied with the norms and submitted the data. There were also complaints that a few B.Ed and D.Ed colleges exist in name only. Several irregularities have been taking place in the education sector, particularly with respect to teacher training institutes. Many colleges do not conduct the classes regularly and allow students to appear for the exams directly.

With an objective to regulate the irregularities taking place in B.Ed and D.Ed colleges, the NCTE engaged Quality Council of India for conducting the quality assessment of these colleges. Star rating will be given to the top performing B.Ed colleges and the system is expected to be functional by the end of this fiscal year.

Experts in the field of education were of the opinion that the government is constantly failing to supervise or monitor the education system in pre-school. There is no proper or appropriate mechanism to regulate the private schools.
