NEET Mandatory for AYUSH Courses from 2018

  • The Ministry of AYUSH confirmed that the admission to AYUSH courses will be based on NEET merit from 2018.
  • The government took this decision to standardise the admission process. 
  • Lucknow would host the International Yoga Day celebrations on June 21.

Giving clarification on admission to AYUSH courses, the centre mentioned that NEET examination will be mandatory for the admission to AYUSH courses. The rule will become applicable from 2018. The candidates who are aspiring for AYUSH courses will have to qualify in NEET examination from 2018.

With an objective to standardise the admission procedure and attract meritorious students, the government has taken this decision. The Ministry of AYUSH has sent advisories to all the state governments in this regard. The ministry indicated that the demand for AYUSH courses has been increasing, and there is a need to maintain the standard of education in this stream. Therefore, the government has decided to carry out the admission process through NEET.

From next year, no institute must conduct a separate entrance examination for the admission to AYUSH courses. All the institutes, private/ deemed universities must carry out the admission process to AYUSH courses based on NEET merit.

Mr. Shripad Yesso Naik, Minister of AYUSH (State) has given clarification regarding the same. Giving details about the International Yoga Day celebrations on June 21, 2017, Mr. Naik pointed that the number of people participating in Yoga has been increased by 30 percent in the past two years. With an objective to promote this traditional practice, the government will dedicate 100 parks for Yoga activities across the country.

He further revealed that Lucknow would host the International Yoga Day celebrations this year. Prime Minister of India Mr. Narendra Modi will take part in the celebrations. The ministry is expecting around 51,000 people to take part in the celebrations. Around 150 countries are likely to participate in this event.

With an objective to incorporate the elements of AYUSH in Allopathy, the ministry has suggested the Prime Minister and Medical Council of India to re-frame the curricula. The talks are still going on, and the final decision has not been taken in this regard, an official said.
