DMK leader M. Karunanidhi on Tuesday, 18th October 2016, alleged that the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) as devised by the Centre would not bring social justice in Tamil Nadu.

While cautioning the state government the DMK leader said that the hopes of students belonging to backward classes and rural areas entering medical colleges would become a distant dream. He urged the state government to take steps to get the test abolished for the students of the state.

Karunanidhi said that the state is against NEET and it was given an exception from participating in the current year. But as per order of Supreme Court, it has to adopt NEET scores in 2017 for admission to medical colleges.

NEET is an entrance examination in India, for students willing to study any graduate medical course like - Dental course (BDS), MBBS, Postgraduate course (MD/MS).

The course is conducted for both government and private medical colleges in India. The much-discussed exam is conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). The exam replaced previous All India Pre Medical Test (AIPMT) and several other individual MBBS exams conducted by states or colleges themselves. However, several institutes and private colleges had taken a stay order and they conducted private examinations for admission to its MBBS and BDS courses.

However, the undergraduate courses at the AIIMS in New Delhi, Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research JIPMER, Postgraduate Institute for Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh etc do not come under NEET's purview. These institutes were set up by separate laws.
