NFAI Collaborates with SPPU to Start Course in Indian Film Studies
- National Film Archive of India and Savitribai Phule Pune University will together offer a new course in Indian Film Studies.
- The focus will be on different genres of Indian Cinema, its history and culture throughout the one-year programme.
National Film Archive of India (NFAI) has collaborated with Department of Media and Communication Studies (DMCS) at Savitribai Phule Pune University to introduce a new course in film studies where students can gain knowledge about the history, methods, and motifs of different genres of Indian cinema. The duration of the course is one year and the intake capacity is 25 per batch.
The new course in film studies is a flexible program which will offer students with an opportunity to explore the following areas:
- Film Theory
- Indian Cinema History & Culture
- Different Genres in Indian Cinema
- Research and Applied Practical Knowledge
- Regional Cinema
Candidates with a bachelor’s degree in any field are eligible to apply for the programme. The fees for Maharashtra candidates is Rs. 21,550 whereas for the candidates from outside the state, it will be Rs.41,156. The entrance exam will take place in June.

According to DMCS officials, the main aim of the course is to enhance the theoretical and professional knowledge of the students who are planning to take up the research in the respective field. Through this new course in film studies, students who are relatively new to the subject area will establish a foundation and be benefitted if they wish to pursue jobs in the film industry.
Dr. Madhavi Reddy, head of Department, DMCS said that they have been planning to introduce the diploma programme since two years. At present, no other university across the country is offering a specialization in Indian Film Studies.

She further said that most of the existing courses focus on global cinema and do not pay much attention to Indian or regional cinema. The main aim is to go beyond Hindi cinema and explore more options like Marathi and Telugu cinema. The programme will be academic in nature and will address serious concerns in Indian film studies.
