Various Private and Government Engineering colleges in Odisha are witnessing major vacancy in the seats for students admission. 80 per cent of 34,223 seats in these engineering colleges remained vacant after Phase 2 of the admission process. The colleges admitted students for about 7,000 seats, leaving around 27,000 seats vacant in Odisha engineering colleges.

So far, the second phase of admissions has ended yet, no increment in the admissions was seen. According to the Vice-Chairman of Odisha Joint Entrance Examination (OJEE) board, Manish Tripathy said that the board has reduced around four thousand seats for the academic session of 2019-20. Stating the cause he said that this step was taken following the course of enrollment in engineering colleges with a low percentage.

Talking about the dip in admissions, Vice-Chairman claimed that students are not very interested in taking admission to the lesser-known programmes. According to him, the seats for core streams in most of the engineering colleges in Odisha have been filled. The counselling process is still continued and there is an expectation of filling more seats via the spot-admission process, he added.

While talking about the same, the secretary of OPECA (Odisha Private Engineering College Association), Binod Dash stated the reason behind the fall in admissions to engineering colleges saying that due of lack of job available in the field, students are lacking interest in pursuing B.Tech. He said that only 30 per cent of the total students got placed in the last five years.

Majority of the engineering colleges in the state of Odisha are affiliated under the Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT). An official from the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology rebuked the education pattern and curriculum of BPUT for the drastic dip in the admissions.

Like the engineering colleges in Odisha, the Engineering colleges in Tamilnadu, Gujarat engineering colleges, B.Tech colleges in Telangana, Chhattisgarh engineering colleges and even IIT Roorkee are facing the same problems. If the colleges do not make the situations better soon, this might cause a great problem in future.
