Osmania University (OU), Hyderabad organised International day for Disaster Reduction programme in collaboration with National Council of Rural Institutes on October 13, 2016. The primary theme of the programme was to discuss climate variations and disaster preparedness. Mahendra Rajaram, Disaster Risk Reduction Officer of UNICEF, took part in the programme and addressed the students. The programme was attended by teacher educators from 60 B.Ed colleges across the state.

Mahendra Rajaram pointed that Hyderabad had experienced unprecedented hot summers followed by intermittent rains which indicate random variability in the climate. He revealed that it is time to ready communities, schools and administration. Teachers and teacher education institutes have to play a significant role in promoting education for disaster risk reduction and preparedness.

He said that training schools and students through mock drills and practical aspects of taking precautions is an important part of teacher education. It is time to help the rural communities to identify their strengths and address the areas of concern in the context of recurring droughts and floods. For this purpose, transaction and research in Disaster Management Education is essential.

Prof. Rama Krishna, Dean, Faculty of Education, OU stated that the Education Department of OU has developed a curriculum on Disaster Management for B.Ed and M.Ed students and the curriculum is being implemented from the current academic year.

As a part of this programme, mock exercise on evacuation, response to earthquakes, fire and floods were practised by the Teacher Educators.
