PM Narendra Modi's Khelo India Initiative
- Prime Minister of India, Shri. Narendra Modi inaugurated Khelo India School Games on January 31, 2018.
- On this occasion, PM assured financial assistance of Rs. 5 lakh to each of the 1,000 athletes for 8 years.
The launch of Khelo India School Games byPrime Minister of India, Shri. Narendra Modi took place recently. The project is being executed by Sports Minister Mr. Rajyavardhan Rathore and is considered as a positive step towards creating an environment that is promising enough to reap benefits in future. During the inaugural ceremony, Modi also announced that the government has revised the norms to reward coaches whose children return with medals in international events. Depending on the stature of the event, it is customary for the central or state governments to give a cash award to the athlete and current coach. However, it is not fair to forget the coaches who had trained the athletes at the beginning of their career, pointed Mr. Modi.
Adding further, honourable PM stated that only the current coach is being awarded when the athlete returns with a medal. Even though the practice is correct, one must remember the contribution made by those coaches who unearthed the skills of athletes at the young age. From now, the government will recognise the contribution of every coach who contributed towards the development and progress of the athlete, he concluded.

Khelo India School Games began on January 31 and will continue until February 8, 2018. The event is conducted in 16 disciplines of athletics, and over 3,700 athletes will take part in the event.
During the opening ceremony of the event, Prime Minister assured financial assistance of Rs. 5 lakh for 1,000 athletes every year. The selection of the athletes for the financial assistance will be based on their performance and achievements. The financial assistance will be applicable for eight years, he explained.

On the opening day of the event, an athlete from Uttaranchal bagged the gold medal in 1,500m (final), and two athletes from Tamil Nadu won gold medals in the triple jump. Now that the event has neared its completion, heartiest congratulations and kudos to all the winners!
