In a letter to JNU VC Jagadesh Kumar, politician Kirti Azad said that he wants the college to start with a course on the Maithili language. He proposed that the college should start with a Centre for Maithili Studies.

Azad pointed out that the community of Maithili speakers have taken part and contributed to the traditions of India in various ways. He also said that Maithili is a very rare language and has its own traditional script which has been modified for different language over the years.
