Honourable President of India, Mr. Pranab Mukharjee participated in the first convocation of National Institute of Technology, Delhi on September 7, 2016. It is the first convocation of the institute, and the President congratulated all the graduating students and said that the institute has been operating in a transit campus, and has made its best efforts to provide quality in education along with good infrastructure facilities. The institute has reached a milestone in a short span of time. He appreciated the efforts of the management and faculty for their dedication and sincerity and motivated them to continue it further.

He mentioned that higher education plays a significant role in moulding the future citizens of the country. The institutes in India have to focus on academic development and capacity building of the students. They must promote continuous education and learning by infusing unique capabilities through the education system for nurturing students for a lifetime.

He divided the special capabilities into three essential elements:-

  • The students must be adept at using the technology. For this purpose, the institutes have to facilitate the students with world-class lab equipment and promote research among the students. The faculty will have to update themselves according to the latest changes in technology.
  • The institutes have to promote research and innovation among the students. They have to encourage the students to put into practice what they have learnt in the classes. Assistance must be provided to the students in design and manufacturing.
  • The institutes must promote the qualities of entrepreneurship among the students for societal development. a vision of human betterment must be inculcated in students.

The President said that the future technical education in India is in the hands of IITs and NITs. The students of these institutes must work for the all-round development. These institutes have to provide world-class teaching and infrastructure to promote research and develop skills in the students.

He concluded that India is an old land but a young nation. The country has developed remarkably after independence in all the sectors. The students from various professions have to work for the development of the country.
