A Delhi University Teachers’ Association (DUTA) delegation met Mr. Manish Sisodia (Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi) and urged him to release grants for 28 government-funded colleges as an interim relief. The University of Delhi has failed to appoint government bodies for these colleges following which the Government of Delhi decided to freeze funds for all these colleges in July 2017. These 28 colleges are fully/ partially funded by the Delhi government.

According to a statement released by DUTA, the 28 colleges are finding it difficult to release salaries for the teaching and non-teaching staff. The freeze of funds by the Delhi government has adversely affected the financial stability of these colleges. Therefore, DUTA President and a few other members met Mr. Sisodia and expressed their grief over the financial condition of the Delhi colleges.

While replying to the delegation, Mr. Manish Sisodia pointed that the government decided to freeze the funds due to an inordinate delay by the University of Delhi in constituting the governing bodies.

DUTA further expressed that the teachers and non-teaching staff are suffering financially since colleges are unable to pay them salaries. It is not judicial to make teachers and students suffer due to the tussle between the University of Delhi and Government of Delhi. They were of the opinion of that the government must grant an interim relief of funds required to pay salaries.

The members of DUTA also discussed the corruption and misuse of office by the Principal of Bhagini Nivedita College. An issue related to inadequate teaching posts, particularly in Deen Dayal Upadhyaya College was also discussed during the meeting.
