Supreme Court Fixes Rs. 11 Lakh fee for MBBS Courses in Self-Financing Colleges in Kerala
- The Supreme Court informed that the interim fee structure would continue until the Fee Fixation Committee decides the fee structure for MBBS in Kerala
- Attorney General was not satisfied with the fee fixed by Supreme Court.
Through an interim order, the Supreme Court of India has fixed Rs. 11 lakh as the course fee for MBBS course in self-financing medical colleges across Kerala. A board of Justices L Nageswara Rao and S A Bodhe indicated that students need to pay Rs. 5 lakh at the time of admission and the rest will be given as bank guarantee. The students will be given only 15 days to furnish the bank guarantee. The court further indicated that the interim fee structure would continue until the Fee Fixation Committee decides the fee structure for MBBS course. Until the final verdict, the additional amount will be preserved in a separate bank account.

While fixing the fee for MBBS course in self-financing colleges, the Apex Court considered the last year’s fee structure, which was Rs. 10 lakh.
Attorney General Mr. K K Venugopal, who was appearing for the centre argued that around 50% students admitted to these colleges belong to Scheduled Tribes and Scheduled Castes. Therefore, it might be easy for these students to furnish bank guarantee for Rs. 6 lakh. Hence, the bank guarantee was no relief to the economically backward students belonging to these communities.

Attorney General further assured the court that the Fee Fixation Committee would come up with the fee details by October 15, 2017. He also requested the Supreme Court to adjourn the matter until the submission of fee structure by Fee Fixation Committee. However, the Apex Court rejected the plea.
