Supreme Court Refuses to Interfere in Selection Process of New VC of AMU
The Supreme Court of India, on Monday, 13 February 2017, refused to interfere with the selection and appointment process of the Vice- Chancellor of the AMU
The Supreme Court of India, on Monday, 13 February 2017, refused to interfere with the selection and appointment process of the newly appointed Vice- Chancellor of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) and has dismissed a plea in this regard.
The Supreme Court also declined to de-tag another plea, where the appointment of the present VC has been challenged. According to the petition that challenges the appointment of VC, Aligarh Muslim University's status as a minority institution was held as unconstitutional by the High Court of Allahabad.

Before dismissing the plea, the bench took on record that all the three shortlisted candidates for the post of VC fulfil the academic guidelines laid by University Grant Commission for the post.
A few months back a petition was filed in the Supreme Countr challenging University's selection process in appointing Gen (Retd) Zameeruddin Shah for the post of VC of the University.
Advocate Prashant Bhushan had alleged that the procedure adopted by Aligarh Muslim University to select three names was not in lines with the UGC's norms. He expressed doubt whether the three candidates had the requisite academic qualifications. He further pointed out that there would be serious implications if the guidelines of UGC are not followed by central universities like AMU in a proper manner. He had maintained that regulations of UGC were pre-requisites for selecting the VC and AMU cannot avoid these regulations.

Raju Ramachandran, AMU's counsellor told the bench that all three names sent to the President of India had the requisite UGC qualification. There was no irregularity in the shortlisting those candidates. The bench had asked advocate Bhushan not to stop the process of appointment of the VC.
