Telangana: Private Universities have 25% Reservation for State Students
- Telangana government is planning to grant approval for private universities to improve the quality of education.
- 25% seats in private universities will be reserved to Telangana domicile students.
Telangana government has taken a path-breaking decision by reserving 25% seats in private colleges across the state for Telangana students on the basis of their domicile status. On the other hand, private universities that will be set up in Telangana will have full autonomy to introduce new courses and frame admission guidelines. However, these universities will have to follow the admission norms that they have committed to the State Government in its detailed project proposal.

Education Minister of Telangana, Mr. Kadiyam Srihari specified that the course in private universities must be fixed through a fee-fixation committee. Member of the Board of Management will act as the Chairperson of the fee-fixation committee. Members of the committee should be drawn from the Academic Council and externally, he explained.
If the existing higher learning institutes or colleges are given the approval to be transformed into a varsity, the state government will make sure that the existing rule of reservation will continue in these varsities. A draft Bill of Telangana State Public Universities was introduced by Education Minister of Telangana in the State Assembly on March 27, 2018. The details about the new reservation policy and guidelines for setting up private universities were included in the draft Bill.

As per the guidelines, private universities will have to adhere to the fee structure fixed by the fee-fixation committee.
If any sponsoring body is interested to start private university in Telangana, the concerned authorities will have to submit an application to the state government detailing the purpose and vision of the proposed private university. The proposal should also include courses that will be offered and fee particulars.
Already, several popular companies like Reliance have shown interest in setting up a university in Telangana.
