TISS CLIx Project Bags Another International Award

CLIx or Connected Learning Initiative rolled out by TATA Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is a project which has been working to improve the quality of education in rural schools all over India through e-learning and other technological support.CLIx project has won the Open Education Awards for Excellence 2019 which is given to them by US-based Consortium of Open Education.

The award which was announced on Monday, 9th September, will be handed over in Milan, Italy in November. The winners were selected by the OE Awards Committee comprising 14 members across 10 countries to recognise the exceptional work done in open education.

The CLIx initiative was launched to upgrade the teaching quality of government schools in rural areas across India. CLIx project was awarded King Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa Prize 2017 for 'Use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT)'. This award was conferred to TISS by UNESCO in 2018.

Under the CLIx project, which is designed to conduct teaching in English, Telugu, and Hindi as of now have benefitted 4 states in India highly. The states are Mizoram, Rajasthan, Telangana, and Chattisgarh.

60,326 students in total from 8th and 9th grade have been benefitted by this programme. Not only that, Teacher Professional Development workshops by CLIx have been attended by 3509 teachers. 478 headteachers along with 238 teacher educators have taken part o to develop the programme.

The director of CLIx, Padma M Sarangapani said that this award is for the success of the collaborative education ecosystem of CLIx. He informed that the contribution from the partners have brought a unique strength in CLIx which has benefited other partners as well, creating an ecosystem-based on knowledge sharing and collaboration. Mr Sangapani has added that an important process of collaboration has come from the north-south India collaboration through CLIx.

Eric Klopfer, who is the professor of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and co-principal investigator at CLIx has expressed joy for the wonderful recognition. The intention of the project is to make it open not only the resources but the technology and product will be also open for a humanitarian cause.

The parallel goal of CLIx is to prove quality at scale through the effective use of digital media and technologies in resource-constrained sectors. With strong local partnerships, CLIx plans to open educative ventures for students to learn Science, Mathematics, Technology, Engineering and English. This project is now eyeing the global educators to build more widespread global learning platform.
