TN Govt Increases Qualifying Marks for SC/ST Students in Engineering Courses

Tamil Nadu Government increases the eligibility marks for SC/ST students for engineering course admission from the 2019-20 academic year. However, the government has decided to reduce the qualifying marks for open category and backward candidates.

The Tamil Nadu State Govt. Department of Higher Education has decided to change the minimum qualified marks required for pursuing B.E./B.Tech courses in the state.

According to the reports, the government has decided to reduce the minimum qualifying marks both for general category and backward category candidates. At the same time, the minimum qualifying marks for SC/ST category candidates has been increased by the department.

Until now, the minimum qualifying marks for Tamil Nadu B.E./B.Tech courses were 50% for general category candidates, 45 % for backward category candidates and SC/ST candidates required a minimum of 35%.

In an official notice issued by the Mangat Ram Sharma, Secretary Department of Higher Education stated that as per AICTE the minimum marks required for students to pursue B.Tech/B.E. course for upcoming academic year has been changed. The minimum qualifying marks for SC/ ST candidates has been increased to 40% from 35%.

Whereas the minimum qualifying marks for general category candidates have been reduced to 45% and for all other, it is 40%. The AICTE officials also informed that the engineering admissions for the 2019-20 academic year will be on the basis of revised regulations only. The officials are of the view that with that less number of SC/ST students will apply for B.Tech/ B.E. admissions this year due to the increase in the qualifying marks.
