Union Cabinet Approves 13 New Central Universities
Union Cabinet has approved 13 new central universities at an expenditure of Rs. 3,639.32 crore. New central universities in 12 states will start functioning within 36 months (3 years).
The Union Cabinet has given approval for the establishment of 13 new central universities across 12 states. Along with approval for new central universities, the Cabinet has approved an expenditure of Rs. 3,639.32 crore for setting up the new central universities. As per the Central Universities Act 2009, 13 new central universities will come up in 12 states.
The new central universities will be set up in the following states – Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Punjab, Orissa, Kerala, Karnataka, Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Gujarat, Bihar and Jammu & Kashmir (two universities).

The funds approved by the Union Cabinet for setting up new central universities will be used to create the required infrastructure for the completion of campuses of central universities. According to sources, the new central universities in the above states will start functioning within 36 months (3 years).
Apart from the approval of Rs. 3,639.32 crore for setting up the new universities, the Union Cabinet has granted ex-facto approval for the grant of Rs. 1,474.65 crore, which will be spent over and above the previous approval by Cabinet for these central universities. The new central universities will focus on providing quality education to students.

From the academic session 2019-20, central universities in India will implement 10% reservation for EWS (Economic Weaker Sections) in general category. Recently, President of India approved 10% reservation for EWS Bill.
