Union Cabinet Approves Rs. 7,000 Crore for Construction of Six IIT Campuses
- Permanent campuses for the six new IITs will soon be functional with the union cabinet's approval for the first phase of grant of Rs. 7,000 crores.
- IIT Goa, IIT Jammu, IIT Palakkad, IIT Tirupati, IIT Dharwad, IIT Bhilai will soon function from permanent campuses.
Six new Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) will soon have permanent campuses as the Union Cabinet has approved Rs. 7,000 crore for their construction which is expected to be completed by 2020-2021. Once done, these six institutes will be able to enroll about 1,200 students each.
The following are the six IITs that are in need of permanent campuses: -
- IIT Tirupati
- IIT Goa
- IIT Bhilai (Chhattisgarh)
- IIT Jammu
- IIT Dharwad
- IIT Palakkad
The construction of permanent campuses with all the modern facilities and infrastructure will help these institutes to provide quality education. Currently, all these six IITs are functioning from temporary campuses with a total strength of 1,503 students. After the construction of permanent campuses, all these institutes could together enroll 7,200 students.

According to sources, a total of Rs. 20,304 crore is required for the construction of the permanent campuses of the six IITs over a period of seven years. The Union Cabinet’s approval for Rs. 7,000 crore is for the first phase of development.
Apart from concentrating on providing quality education, the government shall also take steps to promote research in the Indian Institutes of Technology by providing adequate funding. Majority institutes are unable to take up research due to inadequate funds and resources.

The government has also given its nod for investing Rs. 6,000 crore for improving the quality of ITIs. Since many top performing ITIs are in dilapidated condition, a revamp of these is the need of the hour.
