30% LLB Seats in DU Blocked or Wasted by Students Every Year

A second-year law student of Campus Law Centre, Delhi University filed a plea in High Court alleging that non-serious students waste 30% of DU seats annually. The plea came up for hearing on January 31, 2018. Justice C Hari Shankar and Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal directed the plea for listening before an appropriate bench on February 05, 2018.

The petitioner claimed that over 500-700 law seats are being wasted every year, as students take admission either to prepare for competitive exams or to secure a hostel seat. Some students block LLB seat as a backup plan, stated the petitioner.

The petitioner requested the court for a new direction to the Bar Council of India (BCI), the University of Delhi and Faculty of Law for taking a compulsory bond of Rs. 5 lakh or an appropriate amount from the students taking admission in law courses.

The petitioner further alleged that the existing examination system does not test the ability and talent of the students, as most of the topics for semester exams were predictable and specific. On the other hand, many law students of DU do not refer to case materials to prepare for exams. Instead, students rely on study materials and guidebooks to pass the exams, the petitioner added.

Students will not have any practical experience and exposure if they just rely on study materials or guides for exams. Referring case studies will give an in-depth understanding of a topic and subject.
