7% Rise in Number of Gujarat State Board Students Clearing NEET

The Gujarat state has seen an increase in the number of students from Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) schools cracking the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) this year.

Unlike last year where 80% students from Gujarat Board secured seats in medical and dental courses through the NEET exam, this year the percentage has risen to 87.13%.

Out of the 3,551 seats available for admissions in 2017, a total of 2,839 students from the state board secured seats in medical colleges. On the other hand, as many as 3,354 students got seats in medical and dental colleges out of the total 3,849 available seats in 2018.

Gujarat government attributed the increase in the number of admissions from the state board on various factors like special lectures through Bhaskaracharya Institute for Space Applications & Geoinformatics (BISAG) & question banks prepared by Gujarat State School Textbook Board (GSSTB) etc. It was also noticed that in 2018 NEET exam, it was the first time that students got the exact translation of language from English to Gujarati in the question papers.

The state government requested the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) conducting NEET to translate the question papers in the Gujarati language this year. The question banks of 2017 resulted beneficial for the students, said the State Education Minister, Mr. Bhupendrasinh Chudasama.

NEET exam received a lot of flak and was surrounded by controversy in the year 2017, where the students alleged that the Gujarati question paper was tougher and was different from the English language question paper. Following the controversy, the state government was also looped into it after which it sought an intervention from the HRD ministry. The students also hoped that the NEET exam will be canceled and the admissions will be done on the basis of pro-data. To avoid such controversies, the government decided to give the exact translations of the English to Gujarati question papers this year.
