An Assistant Head Examiner of CBSE shares his 17 years of experience in the education industry and exposes the flaws in the marking scheme of the CBSE guidelines. Having taught at ICSE schools earlier, the examiner has been teaching at CBSE Schools for the past six to seven years.
He informed that his job is to ensure that the examiners mark the answer scripts fairly as per the guidelines and marking scheme of CBSE. Talking about the procedure details, he revealed the following:
Examiners unequipped to grade: The Assistant Head Examiner informed that the quality of examiners is not up to the required standard. He added that teachers recruited by the CBSE to grade, especially Government school teachers, are unequipped to grade. Some of these teachers are also asked to leave as students don’t get the marks they deserve.
Poor payment for correction of scripts: Teachers are paid Rs. 25 per paper for Class 10 answer sheets and Rs. 30 per paper for Class 12 answer sheets. There is also a lot of pressure as teachers are asked to do 10 scripts the first day, 20 scripts on the second day and maintain an average of 25 scripts.
No flexibility in marking scheme: There have been instances where teachers have been checking the answer sheets very harshly. Some of the teachers have been checking the scripts strictly by CBSE’s prescribed marking scheme without giving credit to students who answer the questions in a different but correct approach.
Teachers not taking the job seriously: It has also been reported that teachers are hired to correct sheets of subjects they have never taught. For example, an accountancy teacher was hired to correct economics sheets. Another teacher was asked to leave as she was giving marks without reading the answers, informed the Assistant Head Examiner.
Poor Marking Scheme: The examiner also added that CBSE does not have the provision of providing marks to the students for wrong questions. The board states that marks for wrong questions must only be given to those who have answered the first few correctly. The examiner said that it was unfair as the error in the question is the board’s responsibility.
The examiner also informed that there has been no moderation up to their level of marking. He also added that getting a perfect 100 in Economics happens rarely. He also added that 1100 scripts were corrected at their centre and not a single student out of these scores a perfect 100.
also, recently a case came up where an employee of a CBSE school transported Class 12 Chemistry board exam answer sheets in the metro. CBSE needs to take some serious initiatives to ensure that the answer sheets are securely transferred to all the centres in order to avoid mishandling and tampering.

The Assistant Head Examiner also added that teachers appointed by the CBSE are sometimes underequipped to properly correct the answer sheets. This leads to unfair results where students don’t get the score that they have worked for. He also added that there is need to appoint qualified teachers to improve the marking and correction system.
