The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) issued a gazette notification which mentions that four government engineering colleges in Punjab have to appoint eligible candidates as the principals of the institutions. The council directed the institutes to replace the principals who were not eligible. According to the council, the heads of the engineering colleges must have a background in the relevant field. However, the Punjab government failed to issue any notification for the appointment of principals.

The following government engineering colleges in Punjab do not have eligible principals:-
- Giani Zail Singh Campus College of Engineering and Technology, Bathinda
- Beant College of Engineering and Technology, Gurdaspur
- Baba Hira Singh Bhattal Institute of Engineering and Technology, Lehragaga
- Malout Institute of Management and Information Technology, Malout
The AICTE has issued notifications for all the above colleges to appoint eligible principals. However, the appointment has not been made, and two principals among the four have completed the term of three years as principals. They do not have a degree in technical education and serving as principals for engineering colleges.
AICTE has given time to all these institutes for one year for the recruitment of new principals. However, the council mentioned that ‘deficiency still exists.’
