AMU Students Seek Minority Status for University

Students of Aligarh Muslim University are looking forward to the President's visit at the convocation on 7 March 2018. They have been prevailing upon the NDA government to grant the minority status to the university.

Students submitted the memorandum stating that their sentiments should be given a thought and consideration and that the President should help the university to get the status of a minority institute. As per the memorandum submitted by the students, the minority status of AMU is very critical for the entire Muslim community as it is the very essence of the institute. They have also appealed for the strict and effective measure to prevent atrocities and violence against Muslims and Dalits as the violence against them is increasing day-by-day.

As per the reports, for the past four years, there had been an increase in organised violence in the form of mob lynching and the violence against Dalits has also increased. Apart from this, there has been a considerable increase in the violence against other minorities and marginalised sections of the society that has led to prevalent fear among these group of society.

Students of AMU have also demanded the release of funds for AMU centres at Mallapuram, Murshidabad, and Kishanganj. These centres are facing a huge financial crunch due to non-allocation of the total sanctioned budget. The total sanctioned budget for these centres was around Rs. 349 crores. However, they have only been sanctioned a sum of Rs 130 crore till now.
