NCERT and CBSE set up an Aptitude test to assess the strengths and weaknesses of students studying in class 9th and 10th. The test has been developed as per the directions of MHRD.

Tamanna Aptitude Test

An aptitude test for senior school students is being rolled out to let stakeholders know the aptitude of students of class 9 and 10. The Aptitude test named Tamanna, which is the abbreviated form of ‘Try And Measure Aptitude And Natural Abilities’ is designed by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT).

The project as a collaborative work has been developed under the aegis of HRD (Human Resource Development) and has been piloted by CBSE with the inclusion of 17,000 students across the country studying in the 9th and 10th standards in CBSE affiliated schools.

The MHRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank said while talking about the test that each student is unique and as their physical appearances vary from each other, their psychological abilities will also vary which is common. He added that some students are outgoing and some are introverts, some students are specific while some are very flexible in terms of creativity. Similarly, some students are expressive with art and some are logical with mathematical numbers. The focus of the aptitude test is just to assess those abilities of a student and not put them in another mark scoring rat race.

A very rigorous procedure was followed by CBSE and NCERT to design the test. The test is divided into 7 sub-sections, which are, Language Aptitude Test, Verbal Reasoning, Abstract Reasoning, Mechanical Reasoning, Numerical Aptitude, Perceptual Aptitude and Spatial Aptitude. Text booklets will be given to teachers and parents as a guide to attempt the examination with elaborated details of all the sections.

The PDF document of the manual booklet is available for download by everyone from CBSE and NCERT website. The MHRD has said to the parents that the test is just to check the aptitude abilities of the students. It will be helpful to access the strengths and weaknesses of the students.

The test is not mandatory but should be taken voluntarily by the students. The ministry does not want to impose any extra subjects of study for the students.
