CBSE Clarifies Reason Regarding Cancellation of Class 10 Maths Re-Exam

The matter relating to CBSE re-exam for Maths has come up for hearing on April 20, 2018. The CBSE informed the Delhi HC that the decision to roll back re-exam for Class 10 Mathematics subject was taken only after doing a trend analysis of science, maths and English papers. CBSE does not want to put the future of students at stake for the sake of one student. A Class 10 student filed a petition in HC demanding re-exam for Class 10 Mathematics subject.

During the hearing, the court directed the counsel representing the student to call the petitioner in the court as it wanted to know the reasons why she was demanding re-exam for Class 10 maths. The court has posted the matter for the next hearing, and it will take place on July 23, 2018.

On April 12, 2018, Delhi High Court was informed by CBSE that the decision to not conduct re-exam for Class 10 Maths subject was taken only after the scientific evaluation of answer sheets randomly. During the evaluation process, the board did not observe any major/ unusual pattern to believe that there was a widespread benefit of the alleged paper leak.

An official affidavit submitted to the court by CBSE stated another reason for not holding re-exam for Class 10 Maths subject. The board stated that Class 10 is a gateway to enter into the Class 11, and it remains mostly as an internal segment of school education system.

CBSE has filed the affidavit as a response to PIL (Public Interest Litigation), which is being heard by Justice C Hari Shankar and Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal. The PIL was filed by an NGO seeking a direction to CBSE to hold Class 10 Maths re-exam in April rather than June. However, CBSE is not in favour of conducting re-exam.

The petition filed by an NGO also sought the board to award liberal marks to students in Class 12 economics re-exam.
