According to sources, the Central government is planning to change the names of Rajiv Gandhi Indian Institute of Management, Shillong and Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta. The name of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi will be removed from the name of IIM-Shillong, and the name of IIM-Calcutta will be changed to IIM-Kolkata.
In the year 2008, IIM-Shillong was setup, and it was named as Rajiv Gandhi Indian Institute Management, Shillong. The IIM Bill was introduced in Lok Sabha on February 9, 2017, and a particular section in IIM Bill indicated the change of names for IIM-Shillong & Calcutta.
On the other hand, the Central government also approved the appointment of directors for 10 Indian Institutes of Management on February 10, 2017. Currently, the appointment of directors for four IIMs is pending, and the appointment will be made soon.
Prakash Javadekar held meeting with the directors of IIMs in September 2016. When a question was raised about the removal of Gandhi’s tag for IIM-Shillong, he did not respond. He replied that he came across such type of question for the first time and did not respond.

IIM-Shillong is the only institute in India among the 23 IIMs which has been named after Rajiv Gandhi. The name of the institute led to various problems, and most of the political leaders opposed it in 2008. However, after nine years, the government is likely to arrive at a decision regarding the issue. The decision of the government will be out soon.
