The Union Department of Science and Technology is on a verge to set up a Centre of Excellence at IIT Kharagpur. The intention is to focus on adaptation and mitigation of Climate Change Science.
The Director of IIT Kharagpur, Mr. Chakrabarti said that the project will include biodiversity, water resources, ocean and marine ecosystem, agriculture, disaster risk reduction and management. The decision was taken on the occasion of 6th Convocation of the Institute which was concluded on Sunday.
The estimated budget of the project is Rs. 10 crores for a period of five years. The first five years will focus on risk assessment based on various environmental drivers that affect climatic scenario over Eastern India. The main objective of this project is to predict extreme events through a developed integrated modelling system using machine learning and data analytics. Through this, various remedial measures will be figured out for the future extreme events.
The project will also facilitate a comprehensive analysis of various extreme weather events. Some of the other events to be covered under this project are flash floods, pre-monsoon activity, extreme ocean waves and tropical cyclones.
