Eight colleges in Maharashtra bagged UGC autonomous status. With the addition of eight colleges into the slot of autonomy colleges, the total number of autonomy colleges in Maharashtra went up to 68.

Recently, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has granted autonomy to eight colleges in Maharashtra. Out of eight colleges, three colleges are located in Mumbai including Thakur College, Hansraj Jivandas College of Education, and SNDT’s Dr. Bhanuben Mahendra Nanavati College of Home Science.

With the addition of eight colleges into the slot of autonomy colleges, the total number of autonomy colleges in Maharashtra went up to 68 while the number of colleges with autonomy status in Mumbai went up to 16.

Colleges that bagged autonomous status from UGC can apply for a grant of Rs. 5 crores under RUSA (Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan) for improving infrastructure. RUSA focuses on enhancing quality and excellence in autonomous colleges. However, the colleges must have a minimum NAAC score of 3.51 on a 4-point scale.

Higher and Technical Education Minister of Maharashtra, Mr. Vinod Tawade pointed out that the colleges that bagged autonomous status must experiment with their curriculum. These colleges can come up with a revised curriculum with the inclusion of skilled-based courses or subjects, he added.

An official of Dr. Bhanuben Mahendra Nanavati College of Home Science expressed that the autonomy status would allow the college to revise the curriculum of existing programmes as per industry needs. The major focus of these courses will on skill development, reforming assessment system, enhance employability skills, introduce need-based programmes, increase internship period and introduce online courses. The college will soon apply for RUSA grant, he revealed.
