6 Karnataka Institutes and Universities Granted Autonomy by UGC

Out of the total 19 government-run universities in the Karnataka state, 6 have been granted full autonomy by UGC. The selection of the institutions for granting autonomy was done on the basis of the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) grades.

6 Karnataka Institutes and Universities Granted Autonomy by UGC

University Grants Commission has granted autonomy to six higher education institutions in Karnataka. In total, there are 19 government-run universities in the Karnataka state and only four institutions have been granted full autonomy.

‘The selection of the institutions was done on the basis of the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) grading. The institute shall have CGPA points between 3.26 and 3.50 in order to be eligible for the autonomy status.

The four institutions that have been granted full-autonomy include University of Mysore, Jain University, Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) and KLE Academy for Higher Education. The new status will now give these institutes the freedom to introduce new courses, design new curriculum, appoint new faculty and others.

Further, under the category of institutions selected with ranking above 3.50 CGPA (NAAC Ranking), Vivekananda Yoga Anusandana Institute and Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research Institute (both deemed to be universities) have been selected.

Meanwhile, UGC has granted full autonomy to around 62 higher education institutions in the country. UGC will not provide funding to any of these institutions and they will enjoy full academic autonomy. After attaining this status, universities will not be required to seek UGC's approval to start a new course They can take their own decisions regarding the same.
