The students of class 12th of CBSE board demand compensatory marks as the English paper did not offer students with internal choices for two six mark questions. The CBSE Class 12th English Paper took place on 2nd March 2019.
The students of class 12th of CBSE board are demanding grace marking for the English core paper. The English core question paper did not have internal choices for two questions that were of six marks each. The exam was unlike the established pattern of the paper and the students were left stuck at these questions during the examination that was on Saturday, 2nd March 2019. Owing to this error, the students, as well as their parents, are demanding for compensatory marks from CBSE.
Aarti Bansal, Parent of Yajur Bansal who is a class 12th student, said that according to the paper’s pattern, two questions of six marks each were to be asked based on the two novels in CBSE’s syllabus - Silas Marner by George Eliot and The Invisible Man by HG Wells. The schools choose one novel to be taught to their students because there is an internal choice between the two novels in the examination. However, this did not happen in the exam this year as no choice was given to the students. Question 11 had all the sub-questions from one novel and all subquestions of question 12 were from the second novel. It was not possible for the students to attempt all the questions because they were not taught both novels.

A student of GMSSS 15, Nishant, said that overall the paper was fine but that error cost him six marks. Chetna Kaul, Class 12th Student Sacred Heart complained about the error in the exam pattern. She said that the questions from both the novels were made compulsory and they had studied only one.
The President of Chandigarh Parents’ Association, Nitin Goyal, went on to say that they are all demanding grace marks for the students who wrote the English core exam because the optional questions of that paper were made compulsory. He added that they had sent an elaborate representation to CBSE which has now been forwarded to the Controller of Examination, aiming to take appropriate action for it.
The City Coordinator of CBSE, Reema Deewan, advised the students to relax and focus on the upcoming examinations. She said the internal channels of CBSE will convey it to the authorities in case there are any gaps. If there was indeed an error in setting the paper, CBSE will look into the matter and come up with a solution for the same.

A CBSE official told that the error in the paper was regional. Delhi region did not have any issue like this in their question papers. The students who are affected by this error are from the regions of Haryana, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal and Chandigarh.
